Named after Juan Sebastián Elcano, the Basque navigator who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail to find a westward route to the Spice Islands. He had vision, courage, and five ships. But in the Philippines, Magellan was killed. The expedition was lost, broken, and presumed doomed.
Command fell to Juan Sebastián Elcano.
Against all odds — with one remaining ship, the Victoria, and a starving crew — Elcano navigated uncharted waters, evaded enemies, and completed the journey. In 1522, he returned to Spain with just 18 of the original 270 men.
Magellan set the course. Elcano delivered the return.
